Using water as you sand is a great move! Water assists the sandpaper in functioning properly, and it prevents the glass from cracking or shattering. Wet both the glass surface and sandpaper with water before you start sanding. You can also keep a spray bottle nearby to mist the surface with water as you go. It lets things run smoothly and you avoid accidents.
A lot of time, you will have a piece of glass with rough and sharp edge, and that isn’t good. Those sharp edges can be sanded down to make it safe to handle. In the beginning, wipe the sharp edges off with a rough sandpaper. Next, go to fine sandpaper to get it all nice and smooth.
